- The insertion of new radars will provide a complementation in the radar coverage in the region and will be manufactured locally in Brazil.
- These radars will help the Brazilian Air Force to fight against drug trafficking and all types of contraband in the Mid-West border area.
On December 20th 2018, CISCEA signed a contract with Omnisys, Thales Brazilian subsidiary, for the provision of a full radar station composed of primary and secondary radar route (LP23SST-NG and RSM970S radars) for aerial border surveillance. Located in the cities of Ponta Porã, Corumbá and Porto Murtinho, in the western region of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, the radars will be manufactured locally and used by the Brazilian Airspace Control System (SISCEAB) control centers to complement air coverage in that area of the border, especially for the detection of aircraft flying at low attitudes.
Omnisys radars will incorporate features such as electronic protection measures and altimetry, as well as excellent accuracy and target resolution performance, enhancing air coverage and improving control of low-flying aircraft. These radar capabilities will allow a more comprehensive air surveillance, including the detection of small illegal aircraft and assisting in the fight against the transportation of illicit or malicious cargo.
The radars will be manufactured in Brazil by Omnisys at its facilities in São Bernardo do Campo city (Greater São Paulo area). The company is the worldwide manufacturer of those radars for the Thales group, and has already delivered around 65 units, with more than 60% of its production earmarked for export. The radars manufactured in Brazil are operating in several countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia. In addition to manufacturing these radars locally, Omnisys commits to provide the required technical support locally to ensure a high availability rate the equipment, including preventive and corrective maintenance, field technical support and maintenance and operating training.
The LP23SST-NG is a new generation of long-range primary radars, able of detecting cooperative and non-cooperative aircraft. It will be equipped with altimetry capability that will allow to accurate three-dimensional identification of targets, as well as electronic countermeasures that protect the radars of intentional or non-intentional electromagnetic interference. The radars also enables detecting aircraft flying at low or zero speeds such as helicopters, or with high speed and manoeuvrability capabilities such as fighter jets.
Furthermore, the RMS970 is an exceptionally high performance secondary radar generation with more than 200 radars operating in 53 countries. This radar uses innovative techniques and latest technologies, designed to provide the best response to operational requirements, including a high contribution to Air Traffic safety by ensuring a total integrity and availability of the surveillance and communication data, associated to a high reliability.
The association of LP23SST-NG and RSM970S radars provide the best solution to ensure effective air traffic control and surveillance.
