Brazilian Air Force inaugurates new air surveillance radar station in Rondônia

Located in Forte Príncipe da Beira, in the state of Rondônia, the new radar station is the fourth delivered by the Brazilian defence company Omnisys to the Commission for the Implementation of Air Space Control System (CISCEA), with the objective to protect Brazil's borders with Paraguay and Bolivia. The radar station will be inaugurated by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) on September 29th, in Forte Príncipe da Beira, in the municipality of Costa Marques (RO).
The Forte Príncipe da Beira station boasts primary and secondary radars (LP23SST-NG and RSM970S). Adopting high-tech resources and equipment, the station improves the identification of low-flying aircrafts in the border region, bringing operational benefits for both civil control and air defence. In addition to assisting in airspace control, the new station will enhance surveillance and the fight against unauthorised air traffic.

The combination of the primary and secondary radars offers the best solution for effective air traffic control and surveillance. The LP23SST-NG is a new generation long-range primary radar capable of detecting cooperative and non-cooperative aircrafts. The RSM970S belongs to a generation of high-performance secondary radars, which uses innovative techniques developed to best meet operational requirements, ensuring full integrity and availability of surveillance and communication data. The station also features altimetry technologies that allow 3D radar operation, as well as electronic countermeasures.

The radars were manufactured in Brazil by Omnisys at its facilities in São Bernardo do Campo (SP). The Thales Group's subsidiary in Brazil also exports its solutions, which are already present in several countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia. With this new station, Thales celebrates the milestone of 1,000 air traffic surveillance radars delivered worldwide, with stations in more than 100 countries on five continents.

For Omnisys CEO Luiz Henriques, the delivery of the 1,000th Thales radar worldwide to Brazil is a milestone in the excellent relationship the company has built throughout its history with the country's defence. "It is an honour to reach this milestone with a station in Rondônia, consolidating Omnisys' and Thales' partnership with one of the pillars of Brazilian sovereignty: the defence and security of its borders."

This is the company's last delivery with reference to the contracts signed in 2018 and 2019 with the Brazilian Air Force, through the Commission for the Implementation of Airspace Control System (CISCEA), an entity that is part of the Department of Airspace Control (DECEA), for the purchase of four surveillance radar stations. The first station to have this new equipment was in Corumbá (MS), inaugurated in August 2020, the second, delivered in May 2021, is located in Porto Murtinho (MS) and the third, delivered in August 2021, in Ponta Porã (MS). All radar stations are fully operational and play an important role in airspace control and border surveillance to combat unauthorised air traffic.
