Thales, a strategic regional partner, participates at LAAD, the largest Defence Exhibition in Latin America

Thales, a global technology leader for the Aerospace, Transport, Space, Defence and Security markets, will present its most advanced solutions for the defence industry during the 11th edition of LAAD – Defence & Security, taking place in Rio de Janeiro, from 4 to 7 April.


With a 50-year history in Latin America, Thales has references in national strategic programmes in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, providing solutions spanning from air surveillance to smart city, to core equipment for military platforms or satellites systems.


In most of the Latin American countries, Thales has built a strategic long-term relationship with the Armed Forces.

  • In Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Venezuela, Thales is a key partner of the Navies providing sonars, naval radars, electronic warfare and communication systems
  • The Brazilian Army selected Thales and its SOTAS solution for its armored cars intercommunication
  • Thales has been deploying, for over 40 years, Air Traffic Control radars for DECEA, the Brazilian Air Traffic Management authority. Thales produces long range air surveillance radars in its subsidiary Omnisys located in São Bernardo do Campo / SP - Brazil, which is part of the global radar excellence centres of Thales

Thales participates in the Space Programmes of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Chile.

  • In Brazil, Thales is a strategic partner of the Geostationary Satellite for Defence & Communications (SGDC) programme, being responsible for the development and production of the satellite, delivered to the Brazilian government in 2016. As part of the SGDC programme, Thales is actively supporting the development of the Brazilian Space Industry by leading the Transfer of Technology (ToT) to Brazilian companies.
  • In Argentina, Thales was responsible for the payloads of ARSAT-1 and ARSAT-2 telecommunication satellites.
  • In Bolivia, Thales provided transponders for the Tupac Katari satellite. In Chile, a Thales Alenia Space has delivered 25 antenna dishes which support the ALMA astronomical observatory for European Southern Observatory.

As part of its growth ambition, Thales is committed to invest in emerging markets, in particular Latin America.
Since 2015, Thales reinforced its presence in Brazil with the local production of secondary radars, the establishment of centres of excellence for radars and sonars and the implementation of a space technology centre. Besides, Thales established new offices in Panama, Peru and Bolivia, and set up defence sales workforce cell in Mexico.
In 2017, Thales will continue to invest in the region as part of its strategy for globalisation, developing and extending industrial capabilities in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and other Latin American countries. The objective is for the Group to serve the region’s Armed Forces in partnership with the local industry, reinforcing long-term relationship with its customers.
